Lord of the Rings - Singapore - August, 2025
We first saw Lord of the Rings in the Theatre Royal, London, with a 'state of the art' stage which lifted, turned, and did all sorts of tricks. So, we had no idea how this would transfer to a touring production. However, clever use of projection and lighting offered a good compromise - and we enjoyed the production.
The Great Gatsby - London - July, 2025
A new show for 2025, we went to see The Great Gatsby, expecting some colour on a big stage. The show exceeded our expectations - with amazing sets and costumes, some great voices, and a truly magnificent production. Highly recommended - we'd happily watch this again - although, a touring production would never be able to use the sets and depth of London's largest stage!
Matilda - London - July, 2025
Yes, Matilda again! We have seen this show plenty of times now. The main reason for this visit was Shanhong is producing/directing the show in her school this year for the Grade 5 musical - a last chance for some inspiration. It is still a good show though.
Hercules - London - July, 2025
A new Disney had to be seen, especially in my favourite London theatre. It's a fun show, but not the best of the Disney series. Unfortunately, the show was stopped twice and the curtain lowered due to technical difficulties. So, not so impressed. Surprisingly, I could not find a trailer video for the West End production either - so here are some clips from the show in Germany. It gives an impression - I will update if I ever find a UK trailer.
Phantom of the Opera - Singapore - May, 2025
I can't remember how many times I have seen this show! It's still good - one of the real classics, but for me, no longer exciting. I don't need to see this again. Having said that, something tells me I will, it's one of Shanhong's favourites - although she is getting fussy about the voice of the Phantom. No one beats Killian Donnelly!
Wicked - Singapore - March, 2025
Still a great show - even on the 4th viewing. Set was great, lighting fantastic, and we know the story and songs are good. Yeah, still a lovely bit of musical theatre - I'd go again!
Sunset Boulevard - Singapore - Feb, 2025
Well, always good to see a show we haven't seen before, but this is not one I need to see again. Not the greatest of plots, not the best of music. The redeeming feature was the set - impressive for a touring production. I think this guy sums it up best of all. https://www.straitstimes.com/life/entertainment/theatre-review-for-better-or-worse-sunset-boulevard-is-all-about-sarah-brightman
Andrew Lloyd Webber - Singapore - Jan, 2025
This was a special night. Base Entertainment had arranged an Andrew Lloyd Webber Symphonic Concert, and it just so happens that Shanhong is doing Joseph, an Andrew Lloyd Webber show at school. So, Base added some Joseph songs and invited Shanhong's main cast to be the backing childrens' choir. What an opportunity! So, while I was in the audience, Shanhong was exploring the backstage areas with the kids!
The Nutcracker - Singapore - Dec, 2024
Although I am not a fan, Shanhong likes the ballet. So, when a Russian production tours in Asia - we had to go. Unfortunately, not a great production at all, probably a reason these dancers are touring in Asia rather than performing in Russia! Singapore audiences simply don't understand ballet etiquette either!
SIX - Singapore - Nov, 2024
SIX passing through Singapore was not to be missed, even if it was the third time we have seen this show! It didn't disappoint - such a simple idea, yet so well executed!
